NYPC PalmPilot SIG Meeting Jan 3, 2007

Ted and Grace from the NYPC PalmPilot SIG just dropped me a line with the details for next week's meeting.

January 3rd meeting: More music on your Palm with 'aacPlus' (vs. MP3)
2007 - out with the old, in with the new

MP3 audio OUT, 'aacPlus' IN

Come see what the newest audio technology has to offer. 'aacPlus' is an audio codec that's been around for a couple of years but is now gaining traction. 'aacPlus' music files are smaller AND have superior audio fidelity than MP3 files. 'aacPlus', NOT 'AAC', produces smaller files and has superior sound to MP3 files ripped at high, 96kbps, or higher rates. Now you can have more songs in the same memory footprint. Whether you have a Palm or not, see how you can rip your music to this exciting new audio format on your PC. Then transfer them to your portable device and take it with you.

WINAMPmp - is used to rip/transcode your music files (http://www.winamp.com). Winamp is freeware. Winamp for the PC has recently added, for free, the ability to convert music files and rip CD's to this format.

Palm: Ptunes Deluxe - not free, but worth it.
(http://www.pocket-tunes.com/). Ptunes, for Palm, has just released version 4.0.1 which includes 'aacPlus'

Hearing is believing. Hear the difference at the Palm SIG, Jan 3, 2007

See you in New Year!

Sincerely,
Ted and Grace

The Palm Support Chat Returns

PalmAddict Treo editor, PJ Arts, beat me to the punch on this one. It seems that Palm has launched a new customer support chat system. After reading this article, I recalled having used a similar service when I was using my Palm Vx with MultiMail (the mail client that came before VersaMail).

Like the rest of the Treo 700p community, I am anxiously awaiting the release of the promised firmware updater. Even though Palm has said that it is due to be released in Q1-2007, that doesn't keep me from sneaking over to their Support pages every couple of days.

When I bopped over there last night, I saw something new...an icon saying:
"LIVE CHAT...Get Help With HotSync"

Needless to say, I had to push the button, and after a few minutes, was connected to an online support tech (the transcript is below).

The Garnet Source Code Deal: Part 2 is this week's new 1SRC editorial.

CityTime for Palm OS Updated

CodeCity has announced that they have released CityTime 5.8.2 for the Palm OS platform. This is a free upgrade for all existing Palm OS CityTime customers.

The following has been taken from the upgrade annoucement email sent to registered customers:

There are some important database changes in this version to update the Daylight Saving Time settings for various cities. DST in the U.S. has changed for 2007 and Perth (Australia) currently has DST on trial for the next three years. If you are upgrading from a previous version, or installing a new copy of the program then these cities will be updated for you automatically. Please note that if you have created your own cities in these areas they will need to be updated individually.

As with previous versions, there is no need to delete the existing application or data files - the new version will install directly over the top of any existing one. All database and registration information will be retained if you are upgrading from a previous version.

We hope you enjoy using the update. Thanks very much for your support of the program.

Back to the Future with Palm

Brighthand's Editor-in-Chief, Ed Hardy, has posted a great new editorial on the state of Palm after yesterday's annoucement.

Think back to 2003. Palm, Inc. was in charge of development of the latest version of the Palm OS, working to make Garnet more competetive with Microsoft's Pocket PC.

Then three passed by, during which a lot of events took place. Spin-offs, buy-outs, roll-outs, name changes, just about everything you can imagine.

So, three years later, we have Palm, Inc. in charge of development of the latest version of the Palm OS, working to make Garnet more competetive with Microsoft's Pocket PC.

More Coverage of the Palm/ACCESS Announcement

Ed Hardy has an excellent article over on Brighthand summing up the details of the new agreement between Palm and ACCESS.

From Ed's article:

As Palm now has the rights to use as well as make changes to this version of the Palm OS, several statements in today's announcement make it clear that it is Palm's intention to restart development on Garnet, which stopped last year under Access/PalmSource.

For example, Mark Bercow, senior vice president of business development at Palm, said, "This agreement gives Palm increased ability to innovate on the Palm OS Garnet base, and to effectively differentiate Palm products long into the future."'

"We value the Palm OS development community, and are very committed to our loyal base of Palm OS customers, all of whom will benefit from the agreement just concluded with Access," said Mark Bercow, senior vice president of business development at Palm.

First thoughts on the Treo 680

Gadgets on the Go founder Jimmie Geddes has posted his initial thoughts on Palm's new Treo 680 smartphone.

Head and Shoulders uses their famous quote in their ads: " Don't forget, you never get a second chance to make a first impression!". When I opened the box and held the 680 in my hand I knew Palm did just that, they've made a great first impression with the new Treo 680.

Upon opening the box I was wondering if there was going to be a noticeable difference between the Treo 680 and my Treo 700p. I mean they basically look like the same device, sans the antenna. When I picked up the 680 I could tell this wasn't a Treo 700p with it's antenna cut off. It feels awesome in the hand, thanks to it's much curvier, and slimmer body. It also seemed much lighter ( a great sign), but it was time to pop in the battery. I looked through the box and couldn't find the battery... did Palm forget to send me a battery? To my pleasant surprise I opened the battery cover and the battery was already in, and fully charged (nice touch). This Treo is is noticeably lighter, thinner, and more comfortable in the hand than my Treo 700p or Treo 700wx (great job Palm).

Palm Licenses Palm OS Garnet Source from ACCESS

ACCESS, the company that owns the source code the Palm OS Garnet, has announced in a press release today that they have reached a new licensing agreement with Palm, Inc. that grants Palm a perpetual license for the Palm OS Garnet operating system source code. Palm will pay ACCESs $44 million.

Under terms of the agreement, ACCESS has granted Palm specific rights to modify the code base of Palm OS Garnet for use in its devices such as the Palm Treo smartphone family and the company’s other handheld computers. The agreement also grants Palm the right to use Palm OS Garnet in whole, or in part, in any product from Palm and together with any other system technologies. To ensure forward-compatibility of Palm OS Garnet applications, ACCESS and Palm have agreed to continue to measure compatibility against the compatibility test harness in use between the two companies.

This agreement between Palm and ACCESS ensures that Palm will continue to develop and deliver solutions built on the Palm OS. Looking forward, one has to wonder how this announcement will effect devices that are released in 2007 that us Palm OS as the platform. Many fans of the Palm OS, myself included, welcome this news.

Saying Goodbye to the Treo 650

"Saying Goodbye to the Treo 650" is my latest 1SRC.com editorial.

This week Palm has quietly announced the Treo 650 smartphone is no longer in production. The announcement came in the form of a small notice at the bottom of the Treo 650 web page that read, “This device is no longer available.” This week, we take a look back at Palm’s popular Treo and examine what worked well and how newer phones are benefiting.

Opera Mini 3.0

Opera recently released version 3.0 of Opera Mini, the Java based, multi-platform web browser which works on feature phones and Windows Mobile and Palm smartphones and handhelds.

Far be it from me to throw a bucket cold water on anyone or thing, however, Opera Mini 3.0 isn't as stable as the previous version has been on my Treo. I'm using the Palm-Powered Treo 700p. Everytime I go to load a page, regardless of which one it is, the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) crashes and I get dumped back into the Palm OS application launcher.

If you plan on trying Opera Mini 3.0, make sure that you backup your Palm handheld or Treo smartphone before installing.

Should you want to try out Opera Mini, you can do so by visiting the official Opera Mini site.
