1SRC Editorial: The Community Makes the Difference

This week's 1SRC Editorial, The Community Makes the Difference has been posted. Rather than focusing on the technology, I decided to take a look at the people who make this all possible.

I’ve always have been intrigued by the user community that grows up around a particular product. When Palm introduced the Pilot some ten years ago, no one could have imagined the multitude of communities that single product would create.

For me, being a member of the Palm community continues to be a rewarding experience. Not because of the handheld computers that we all chose to use. It has more to do with the friendships that are made because of it. Over the last eight years, I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of people, friends, which I would have not otherwise met. Some of these people I’ve met in person at local user groups and others from across the Internet. I get to work and collaborate with many of these people on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. To me, developing these friendships is the most rewarding aspects of being part of the Palm community.

1SRC Editorial: The Year of the Internet

The Year of the Internet

While many people are focused on the impact Apple’s recently announced iPhone will have on Palm and the rest of the mobile industry, I believe that Palm needs to execute on one of their key areas for 2007: the Internet.

Back to the Future?

Palm has been working with Internet companies to bring their brands to the Treo. Orbitz, Fandango, eBay, Yahoo, and Google are just some of the brands that are available on the Treo. To be more accurate, you can access these web portals from the Treo.

Looking back at the old “Palm”, the company before “palmOne”, you may recall the Palm VII and web clipping applications. Web clipping applications, or .pqa files, were how customers of Palm’s other wireless Internet devices (Palm VII, VIIx, and i705) enabled you to get everything from news, to airline flight information, and even where the nearest Star Bucks coffee house was. For those of us who used those handhelds, you will recall how easy is was to get information on the go, browse the web, and yes, get your email.

1SRC Editorial: This "Old" Palm

This week's 1SRC editorial has been posted.

Tungsten T3 and Tungsten C customers can be a little fanatical about their devices. Some people are so passionate about their Tungstens that they have gone out and purchased a second and even third "backup" PDA when their every day unit stops working. In this week's not-quite-an-editorial editorial, we'll look at some options for keeping your aging Palm on par with today's newer handhelds.

War for the '4th screen'

The International Herald Tribune has reported over the weekend that Apple Computer could be releasing what some are calling "the first of the next generation of [mobile] devices..." This leaves me to wonder if this new device will be a phone, an iPod, or a new kind of personal digital assistant (PDA), a term that was coined by former Apple chief, John Scully.

This year the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and MacWorld Expo conferences will be running during the same week. We should be in for a number of surprises and some cool new toys to play with in the very near future.

Engadget Reports Ford's Cars Will Be In "Sync"

I just was this on Engadget Mobile today. It looks cool, but I'll wait for Honda to finally get "in sync". From Engadget...

As expected, it's been announced today that the Blue&Me system originally debuted with Fiat in Europe is finally coming to the States by way of Ford, but not without a name change: "Sync." The setup offers integration with Bluetooth-enabled phones (read: virtually all phones these days) and music players via both A2DP / AVRCP and USB 2.0 connections -- and yes, the iPod's right there at the top of the compatibility list, despite Microsoft's involvement.

Palm HotSync Manager - Fast and Slow Sync

I was troubleshooting an Outlook Contacts to Treo 650 synchronization issue today. While reading through the HotSync log I saw "Fast Sync" next to the Palm Outlook conduits.

It has been a while since I've had to troubleshoot Outlook HotSync issues, and I looked up "Fast Sync" as a quick refresher. If you want to know more about Fast and Slow HotSyncing, take a look at Helphand's Not So FAQ page on the subject.
