Chapura Releases Folder Mirror

MOBILE, Alabama (July 30, 2007) - Chapura(r), Inc., an innovator of mobile personal information management (PIM) synchronization technology, today released FolderMirror 1.0. FolderMirror offers all mobile device owners the ability to carry and stay connected to any Outlook Calendar and Contacts folders.

Chapura's FolderMirror gives mobile device owners the ability to pick and choose which Outlook Calendar and Contacts folders to carry and stay connected with on their device, including any Exchange public folders, subfolders, SharePoint folders, and Business Contact Manager (BCM) Accounts and Business Contacts folders. FolderMirror replicates and
continues to update the desired information in the main Outlook Calendar or Contacts folders allowing wireless or cabled synchronization solutions to transfer the information. This dramatically improves the effectiveness of any mobile device, including the iPhone, Palm OS,
Windows Mobile, RIM (BlackBerry), and Symbian devices.

"With the right applications, mobile platforms deliver increased productivity to mobile professionals," said Jim Chappelle president of Chapura. "An essential part of this is the ability to stay connected to the flow of critical information. We are excited to give all mobile device owners the ability to stay connected to more of this information."

Details of New FolderMirror Software

FolderMirror, in conjunction with wireless and cabled synchronization solutions, fulfills the most crucial Outlook need of mobile device owners; carrying and staying connected to any Outlook Calendar and Contacts folders, including Exchange public folders, subfolders,
SharePoint folders, and Business Contact Manager (BCM) Accounts and Business Contacts folders.

FolderMirror replicates and continues to update the desired information in the main Outlook Calendar or Contacts folders allowing wireless or cabled synchronization solutions to transfer the information. The replicated items are automatically filtered from the users view in
Outlook providing a transparent flow of information from any Outlook Calendar or Contacts folder to any mobile device.

FolderMirror maintains Outlook folders on the mobile device by creating a folder-like category, denoted with an asterisk, in the main Outlook Calendar or Contacts folders. Wirelessly or cabled, the mobile device's Outlook synchronization solution can then transfer this information automatically. These items are organized into folder-like categories on
the device allowing the user to quickly identify which items belong to which Outlook folder.

The company's flagship synchronization product, PocketMirror Standard, has been shipped with over 20 million handhelds.

Pricing and Availability
FolderMirror is available for $49.95 from the Chapura Web site at www.chapura.com and from leading online resellers.

Palm Desktop for Vista Beta Released

Palm has released a beta version of Palm Desktop intended for use with Microsoft Windows Vista only. The new version of Palm Desktop is version 6.2 and includes HotSync Manager 7.0.

Palm Desktop v6.2 is a beta release, which means that the software may still have bugs in it. Palm is releasing the software early so that customers using Windows Vista have a way to HotSync their Palm with their computer. Palm Desktop v6.2 supports the following Palm devices:

  • Treo 755p, 700p, 680, 650
  • Tungsten E2 (aka "E2")
  • Z22, TX
All other Palm OS devices, including the Tungsten T5, Tungsten T3, Zire 71, Tapwave Zodiac, Garmin iQue, and Sony Clie are not supported.

Palm Desktop v6.2, like all previous versions of Palm Desktop is a free download from the Palm website.

I strongly encourage you to read the documentation before you attempt to install Palm Desktop v6.2 on your Windows Vista computer. You should also backup your Palm with an application like NVBackup before attempting the upgrade. Windows XP users should not install this update, and should continue to use Palm Desktop v4.2 or v4.1.4/4.1.4e.

1SRC Editorial: A Bold New Vision

This week's 1SRC Editorial, A Bold New Vision, has been posted.

With product coming to the market like Palm’s Foleo Mobile Companion I wonder if these devices are the first steps in a new computing paradigm or just the latest in a long line of must have “toys.”

From the beginning, Palm has been about mobile computing. Company founder Jeff Hawkins has always said that the future of computing was mobile computing. I recall reading about new technologies that would allow us to have instant access to our data wherever we go early in my IT career. With the rapid rate of change in the technology field, I find myself looking at the devices that we have today and trying to figure out where we are going to be five to ten years down the road.

There are a few things that I see in today’s market that makes me think that we are about to see a shift in how we approach our day-to-day computing. The first is that notebook computer sales are out pacing the sales of desktop models. People no longer want to be tied to their desks when they want to get something done with a computer. Secondly smartphones are finally starting to get some sales traction here in the United States. You can thank the iPhone for that. (Many of the new iPhone users are feature phone users who have traded in their flip phones.) While still insanely over priced, OQO’s model 02 mobile computer is a very intriguing product that I think is three to five years too early to market, and yet, OQO’s vision is very much in line with where I see things progressing to.

Foleo Hands On Review

I've posted a hands on review of the Palm Foleo Mobile Companion over on Foleo Fanatics.

Palm hosted four Foleo Sneak Peek events last week. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Manhattan event held at the Rockefeller Center retail store in New York City. What follows are my first impressions of my hands on time with Palm’s latest product offering.

The first Foleo Mobile Companion has clearly been designed with the mobile business professional in mind. From my brief time with the Foleo I was impressed by what I saw. The Foleo is a light-weight sturdy device that can easily be integrated into my regular business day.

1SRC Editorial: Win-Win Situation

I have posted this week's 1SRC Editorial, "A Win-Win Situation."

This week Palm hits the road for another round of Foleo Sneak Peek events. I see this as a win-win situation for Palm and their customers.

Road Trip

Over the last few years the notion of the technology “trade show” has changed. Regional events like MacWorld: Boston and TechXNY (formerly PC Expo in New York City) have all but disappeared and have been replaced by mega-shows like MacWorld (in California), the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the gaming oriented E3 show. Where does this leave customers who can’t hop a plane and fly out west to these big annual shows? Enter the “road show.”

I’ve been to my fair share of technology trade shows and user conferences in my current IT job; however the travel dollars have dried up in recent years. To get the word out on new products, Palm has tried a novel idea: regional mini events designed to bring customers together to learn about the latest Palm products and give them the chance to try them out in person. Palm started their Treo Road Shows in 2005 and continued them during 2006. At these events Palm would give a presentation or two, and then would invite one of their event partners to come up and demo their product. After the presentations about a dozen or so solution partners had tables setup to demonstrate their products and to answer customer questions. (I met up with a couple of the DataViz marketing folks at the last show I attended. We all agreed that a 90 minute train ride was a bit much for free donuts. But I digress.)

I feel that it is important for there to be an open dialog between the vendor and their customers. It is important to understand the focus of these customer events. Road shows and sneak peeks area designed to give customers access to new products and to learn how they can benefit you and your business.

1SRC Editorial: The Un-Treo

I have posted this week's 1SRC Editorial called The Un-Treo.

At this past weekend’s 1SRC chat the regulars and I kicked around the idea of Palm releasing “the un-Treo.” The un-Treo would be the best parts of the Tungsten C and the TX mashed down and stuffed into the body of a Treo 680. At the time, it seemed like a great idea.

Building the Dream

The un-Treo would be fast. Really fast. A Wi-Fi 802.11g radio could run circles around EDGE cellular connections. The un-Treo would run Palm OS 5.4.9 and would feature 512MB of RAM or more with lots of space left over for DB Cache. Because it is a Palm, it would have ease of use built in thanks to the Palm OS user interface and the great PIM applications that we all know and love.

With the un-Treo you will be able to leave your iPod at home because music will sound great on built-in stereo speakers and cover art and video will look fantastic on a high-res+ 320x480 pixel touch screen that can switch between landscape and portrait modes. (Who needs an iPhone when you can have an un-Treo?)

1SRC Editorial: Worth the Wait

The latest 1SRC editorial has been posted. This week I explorer whether the delay of "Palm OS II" until sometime in calendar year 2008 is really a big problem for Palm's customers.

"In the last nine months, Palm’s business has been impacted by a number of internal and external forces. Some of those changes are a direct result of Palm’s actions; others are changes to the cell phone market. The addition of Elevation Partners to Palm’s board should bring the expertise and managerial oversight that Palm will need to successfully bring new differentiation products to market and deliver a solid Linux OS foundation on which to build next generation applications on top of."
