Palm Store 3-Hour Sale

12/27/05 - Posted by Alan

I received an e-mail from Palm yesterday announcing that Palm will be running a 3 hour sale this week starting Monday (yesterday) and running until Friday afternoon. The sale hours are 1 to 4 pm EST (10am - 1pm PST) and you must visit the Palm site to learn more about the details of the day's sale. This sounds like it can be a great way to pick up Palm handhelds, smartphones, or accessories that didn't make it under the Christmas tree this year.

Life on the Edge - Early Adopters Have all the Fun

12/7/05 - Posted by Alan

Since last week's 1SRC podcast I have been receiving e-mail messages about some compatibilitiy problems with the Palm TX handheld and with the installation of the Palm LifeDrive Update 2.0. These issues are not uncommon for new devices, in the case of the Palm TX, or after a substantial operating system update, as is the case with the LifeDrive update.

Owners of these devices can protect themselves by following some or all the suggested guidelines below. While this won't mean that you will have trouble-free operation of your handheld, it should help reduce the risk of crashes and other odd behavior.

DataViz - A Pleasure to Do Business With

11/16/05 - Posted by Alan

As many of you already know, DataViz released Documents To Go 8.0, their flagship Palm OS office suite application, last week. The most notable feature in DTG 8 Premium is the ability to read native format Adobe Acrobat PDF documents without conversion and with out the loss of charts, tables, and graphics. I received an automated e-mail message from DataViz yesterday announcing the arrival of DTG 8 and as a special gift; purchasers of the DTG 8 upgrade would receive Beiks Software's Dictionary and Thesaurus free with their order. However, I purchased my upgrade the day it was released, November 10, and did not receive the free software offer.

A quick phone call the Milford, Connecticut headquarters put me in contact with a US-based customer support agent who understood what I was asking about, realized that I was a long time customer of DataViz, and quickly helped resolve my situation. Before we hung up, the DataViz employee told me that I would probably receive an e-mail with my registration code and download instructions in about 24 hours or so. Not true! I had received the e-mail, the registration code, and had the software installed on my Palm Tungsten T5 in under two hours. That's two hours from the time I dialed the DataViz phone number until the time I was happily playing with the software on my Palm!

I am truly impressed with the customer support that I received from DataViz. I have always said that I use their software not because I think they develop high quality software, but because they are a local software company (I also live in Connecticut) that understands that good customer service is just as important as good software.

9/24/05 - Posted by Alan

Nothing says success like excess, and that's exactly what happened on late Friday afternoon - Grassnet users breached the monthly bandwidth allowance for the Grassnet servers. Since the Grassnet site is operated entirely out of pocket (there are no ads on Grassnet), I've had to suspend downloads of the popular Tech Talk Palm Powered (tm) podcast and access to the Grassnet discussion forums. This move was made to avoid hefty bandwidth over usage charges. I will be upgrading my hosting plan on Monday and I expect full service to be restored to the site by Wednesday. This service upgrade will provide us with more storage capacity and monthly bandwidth allowances. Please pardon this interruption while the maintenance is underway. Once again, thank you for your support!
